When the system is in normal operation, the vector sum of the three-phase currents on the primary side of the zero-sequence current transformer is zero. When a single-phase grounding fault occurs, a zero-sequence magnetic flux appears in the iron core, and the magnetic flux induces an electromotive force in the secondary winding. The secondary current flows through the grounding relay to make it act.
The zero-sequence current transformer is used in conjunction with a relay protection device or a signaling device when the power system generates zero-sequence grounding current. Activate device components to achieve protection or monitoring functions.
